Starting this June, Tigray residents can expect a major improvement in communication! Safaricom Ethiopia is launching its services in the region, beginning with a rollout of their modern 4G network in 16 cities. This high-speed internet will allow for faster browsing, streaming, and overall better online experiences.

This is just the first phase of Safaricom’s commitment to Tigray. They believe this improved connectivity will not only boost communication but also support economic growth in the region.  The 4G network is designed with the future in mind – it’s built to be easily upgraded to 5G technology, ensuring Tigray stays at the forefront of mobile advancements. This means residents can look forward to even faster and more reliable internet connections in the years to come.

“We are committed to continually enhancing our network to achieve the highest standards of quality and reliability. The telecom services launched in Tigray will play a crucial role in our mission to provide reliable connectivity throughout Ethiopia,” said Safaricom CEO, Wim Vanhelleputte.

To get started with Safaricom’s new network during the initial rollout, customers can acquire a SIM card and choose their preferred phone number through a special selection process.

New customers will also receive a welcome offer that includes:

  • Unlimited calls to other Safaricom numbers for the first seven days.
  • 5 minutes of calls to Ethio telecom numbers.
  • 5 free text messages (SMS).
  • 500MB of data.

Beyond the welcome offer, customers can easily top up their airtime and buy phone accessories at conveniently located stores across urban areas. These stores include both specialty shops and Safaricom’s own branded retail locations.

For residents of Mekelle in particular, Safaricom has opened five stores in various neighborhoods to serve them better. These stores are strategically located at:

  • Enda michael Church area
  • Lachi Edaga Shekalo (Shekalo Market)
  • Near Aksum Hotel
  • Adi Hawsi locality
  • Adiha neighborhood

Residents in Mekelle can visit any of the five conveniently located Safaricom stores to top up their airtime by purchasing vouchers. These stores also offer a selection of phone accessories for purchase.

This is just the beginning for Safaricom in Tigray. They’re actively expanding their network to reach more communities across the region. The next phase will see them introduce their 4G and future-proof 5G-ready services to a wider area.

Safaricom is committed to providing nationwide coverage. Their goal, announced by the CEO in April 2024, is to reach the entire population of Ethiopia. To achieve this, they’re investing heavily (over USD 1.5 billion) to triple their network of towers across the country in the next three years.

Safaricom Ethiopia provides customers with a variety of self-service options accessible through easy-to-remember short codes:
